Two reasons to re-think our current drug policy: 1. Because it is way too expensive! ( Some estimates say the budget for the "war on some drugs" is larger than NASA's! ) 2. Because it is not stopping very many people from using drugs.
If it was up to me, I would change the way we regulate drugs -- legalize marijuana like alcohol and tobacco. Keep hard drugs under the supervision of a doctor -- as is done in England -- which would cut the prison population by half and would help people instead of hurting them.

I actually stumbled upon what I think would be the perfect drug society's system for drugs.
All drugs, excluding unnatural forms of Cocaine, Opium (all those synthetic opiates as well, those are easily replaced with marijuana), and Methamphetamine.
No one under the age of 18 may take a drug without parental consent, also giving drugs to children under the age of 14 is frowned upon.
In order to purchase drugs from a pharmacy, you have to buy a type of card. On this card will be a profile of what drugs you do and how often.
If a person shows signs of serious drug abuse of one or more drugs, they are contacted by the Government or ther personal physicians to make sure they aren't hurting themselves or others.
Anyone found to have an extremely self-destructive drug habit or found hurting other people under the influence will go through rehab in the purest sense of the word.
See, this way, we know who has a drug problem. We can help them. We also have access to some of the best mind drugs on the planet without going to a shady dealer and wondering if you're going to be beat to death by 10 cops for jokingly saying the DEA are a bunch of strap-on dildos for the high government to strap on and fuck the working class with.

If history is any indicator, prohibition doesn't work. That's why alcoholic prohibition was recalled after only a few years.
